In Japan, the word for frog "kaeru" (
蛙) though written with different kanji is pronounced the same way as the verb "kaeru" (
帰る) meaning to return home. Thus frogs are linked to things/people returning to their place of origin. A small frog is often given to travellers to carry as a good luck charm for their safe journey and return. Frog charms put into or attached to purses are thought to help bring money back to the owner.
