Frogs as Good Luck Charms

In Japan, the word for frog "kaeru" () though written with different kanji is pronounced the same way as the verb "kaeru" (帰る) meaning to return home. Thus frogs are linked to things/people returning to their place of origin. A small frog is often given to travellers to carry as a good luck charm for their safe journey and return. Frog charms put into or attached to purses are thought to help bring money back to the owner.
